Q: How do I know what length my cane should be?
A: When a cane is to be used as a mobility aid, it is very important to have the cane properly sized by a professional. If the user does not have a therapist and needs to size it on their own, please refer to the following:
Remove the rubber tip from the cane. If it is tight, a spray of WD-40 may loosen it; twist the tip off rather than pulling it. It will take two people to "fit/measure" a cane. The cane user should be wearing his/her regular walking shoes and standing upright like they normally do (do not stretch). Their arms should hang at their side with a normal bend at the elbow. The friend/helper should place the cane with the handle on the ground on the side the person who will be using the cane. Mark the cane shaft where it touches the middle crease of the user's wrist. The cane should then be cut using a sharp saw (manual or electric with a fine blade). The rubber tip should then be re-attached. Never use a walking cane without a rubber tip to avoid slipping when walking on regular surfaces/floors. A pointed metal Ice tip ferulle should be installed at the bottom of the walking cane when walking on snow/ice or soft squishy ground for stability.
